Abdul Hafidh Fahmy,

Gambling addiction (Pathological gambling )

Gambling in itself is not a bad practice.  It can be an economic engine in a community, a form of entertainment, and a Yale University study has even found it to be stimulating to seniors. However, like so many activities, an interest in doing something can shift to become a compulsive obsession. This can lead to financial difficulty and duress upon other aspects of one’s life like marriage, career and future aspirations.  Compulsive gambling is not a physical addiction the way opioids or alcohol is, but it nonetheless is an addiction. Numbers vary but it is estimated that 2.6% of the United States population  (or about 10 million people ) struggle with gambling issues. Not surprisingly, statistics show that an estimated 65% of marriages with at least one gambling addict end in divorce. More than 85% of marriages with at least one gambling addict face threats from bill collectors and creditors.  With the number of suicide-related cases on the rise , governments and societies all around the world have taken the initiative to stem pathological gambling. According to studies done, a gambler is 20 times more capable of committing suicide than a non-gambler. Studies also show that 550 suicides a year are linked to gambling. Gambling addiction has claimed the lives of people who have allowed themselves to be victims by failing to control themselves. You can avert from this uncouth behaviour before it takes a toll on your financial life and physical well-being. Addicts suffer prolonged depressions and emotional stress which have eventually resulted to poor mental health. As a result of poor mental state, pathological gamblers become more aggressive and  temperamental towards their loved ones and end up altering their relationship with them. In the end they become socially distant and alone with no one to look on their side. In the quest to get easy money, gamblers have run into financial losses as a result of huge  gambling debt that have left them without a dime! According to the Gambling Impact and Behaviour Study, 19.2% of pathological gamblers have filed for bankruptcy because of gambling losses. Addicts have lost their entire life savings with the flick of a button just to show you how serious this addiction is. Imagine all your hard work just gone in a single strike. Instead of  indulging in gambling activities, one can invest their money on lucrative businesses like real estate, online merchandising and agriculture. This is a much better alternative than gambling with your life savings. Let us open our eyes to the reality of life and the world. Delusional thinking will not get us anywhere but will  only bring us down in our pursuit to success.
